looking into suppressors
« on: July 14, 2012, 08:55:05 PM »
Hey i am looking into getting a suppress  or for either my sig 9MM or my AR.  Just looking for information out there. Maybe if someone has one that would be willing to let me shoot/ demonstrate for me.  I just want to know what i am getting into before i drop that wad of cash.

Thanks

Be sure to get a gun trust in place before acquiring a suppressor.  You don't want to have to pay a second transfer tax to move it to a trust later!

I ended up getting a YHM 3100 for my AR. sent in the paper work back in september and still waiting...  worst then waiting for my first born to get here! haha  but i have shot through it a few times at the range there at the store. love it.

Excellent choice - I have a the 7.62 YHM 3100 Ti.   I got the 7.62 so that I could use it on both 7.62 and .223.  Seems it takes about 6 months from when ATF cashes your check to getting your stamp.
It would be an interesting outing to see if there is any noticable suppression difference between the 7.62 can on a .223 and the .223 can on the .223.

FYI - Midway sells the YHM QD mount at a good price.

My understanding is that there is an increase of a "few" decibels when using a 308 can on a 223 compared to a true 223 can.

A few decibels is no big deal in my opinion, that is why I have a gemtech qd-hvt in jail.  They cashed my check in October so I am thinking April timeframe.

if i did it again i might go with the 7.62, but it a little bit more and i am on a small budget.  and i dont have 308 to put it on at the moment. i wouldnt mind getting a can for my 338 lapua though.   I am always down for shooting and comparing the two.  i know when i get my reloading dies i can drop the sound down even more with lowering the charge.

Re: looking into suppressors - under bore calibers

Silencerco had a video a while back testing under bore calibers in one of their Osprey.

Silencerco Osprey-
Sound Suppression
Un-suppressed    .45 @ 163db   .40 @ 161.1db   9mm @159db
Suppressed w/    .45 Osprey   .40 Osprey   9 Osprey
45 acp        133
40 S&W        129.7                 127.1
9 mm        127.58                 124.9                   124.6

example:
shooting a 9mm through a .45 Osprey resulted in a measurement of 127.58 db
shooting a  9mm through a 9mm Osprey resulted in a measurement of 124.9 db
the difference is only 2.7 db -- I'm not sure if you could even hear the difference.

Might be able to hear the difference, just couldn't afford to pay the price for additional suppressor to take advantage of the difference.
